Representatives of the Urbanna Town Council and staff met with Middlesex County officials recently to gauge the county’s interest in reopening a DMV Select office by helping the Town share the expense of a DMV Select operation.
The town council is not funding another year of the DMV Select in the current budget that began July 1. In the previous two years, the DMV Select commissions did not come close to covering its expenses.
Urbanna Town Councilor Marjorie Austin, who fostered the DMV Select in Urbanna, was absent from the July 25 council meeting and Mayor William Goldsmith said the council should wait until Austin was present to discuss the matter further, so it was deferred.
Goldsmith commented there are some benefits to reopening a DMV Select office in the county. “The question is at what cost or whether we [Urbanna] want to carry any cost,” Goldsmith said. “So we need to have an open discussion.”
