Supt. to Kiwanians: MHS modernization needed; cost $63 million

At a recent Middlesex County Kiwanis Club meeting, the guest speaker was Dr. Tracy Seitz, superintendent of Middlesex County Public Schools (MCPS), on the topic of “community.” 

Dr. Seitz pointed out that one of the sites that has been well-used by the Middlesex community since 1949 is Middlesex High School (MHS). A recent engineering review of current space use at MHS revealed that many aspects of the building do not meet current Virginia Department of Education and ADA space standards.

These include classrooms and support spaces. Most of the code and mechanical issues may be either impossible or cost-prohibitive to bring into compliance without major renovation. In short, our high school needs help from our community.

Many options are being considered to fund what is estimated to be a project that will cost about $63 million. One of these options that has become available is a 1% sales tax that was recently approved in an amendment to state law by the Virginia General Assembly…
