Supervisors to consider extending tax due date

by Larry Chowning –

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) is planning to consider an extension of the real estate tax payment due date, interest, and penalties for late payments. The extension is expected to be discussed at the supervisors next regular monthly board meeting, which is set for 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 7 in the Middlesex Historic Courthouse at 865 General Puller Highway in Saluda.

“Members of the BOS are concerned that the time allowed for mail handling and bill processing by citizens is too short before penalties and interest begin, particularly in light of the changes in assessments that have taken place,” said Chairman Lud Kimbrough.

“Therefore the agenda for the June 7 meeting will include a proposed resolution extending the payment due date to July 6, the penalty date to July 7, and extending the interest date to Aug. 1.

“The billing system used by the Middlesex County treasurer’s office is programmed to apply the standard dates for penalties and interest. The treasurer has contacted the supplier of the billing program and is prepared to modify the dates,” Kimbrough told the Sentinel.
