Rodney Louis Curtis, 77, of Admore, Pa., departed this life and entered eternal rest on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023 at Bryn Mawr Hospital. He was born July 7, 1945 in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late James Lewis Curtis and Christine Muse Curtis.
Rodney grew up and received his early Christian education at Union Shiloh Baptist Church in Laneview. He attended Shiloh Elementary School and, in 1965, graduated from St. Clare Walker High School. He continued his education at Virginia Union University in Richmond before joining the United States Army.
While enlisted, Rodney received training to become an armament specialist. He received service medals and was a decorated Vietnam veteran. In 1968, he was honorably discharged from military duty.
Following military service, Rodney worked various jobs before making a career with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB). He was employed by the PLCB for more than 30 years. He retired in 2002 as a manager.
He was a dedicated member of Zion Baptist Church in Ardmore under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. James A. Pollard Sr. He served as a trustee and as vice chairman of the Trustee Board at Zion. In 2022 he was made trustee emeritus.
Rodney was an avid collector of pens, coins, and figurines of birds. He also enjoyed assembling model cars and had a profound love for jazz music.
Rodney was preceded in earthly death by his brothers, Walter Curtis and James Curtis. Left to cherish memories are his loving partner, Connie Heard; children, Kim (Gregory) Bagby, Caulette (Bryon) Allen, Nyeta (Kenneth) Griggs, and Daniel Heard; grandchildren, Micah (Michael) Bess, AnnaLisa Reed, Andrew Holmes, Bryon Allen, Elijah Allen, Jaylyn Heard, and Caleb Griggs; great-grandchildren, Elle Elliott, Marley Elliott, and Wesley Sydnor; siblings, Barbara Holmes, William (Zana) Curtis, Bernard (Jean) Curtis, Paulette Brokenborough, Marva Gibbs, and Vashti (Raymond) Woods; as well as a host of aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Services to honor Rodney’s life are planned for March 2 at Zion Baptist Church in Ardmore. The services will begin with a 9-10 a.m. viewing, followed by a 10 a.m. celebration of life service. Interment will be at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown, Pa.
