Middlesex to study ‘service districts’

During a Middlesex County Board of Supervisors work session on January 10 to discuss strategic budget goals, Pinetop District supervisor Lud Kimbrough brought up the concept of creating a “Powers of Service District” in Pinetop District.   

The Virginia Code section on “Powers of Service Districts” states the board of supervisors has the authority to create a service district. The purpose can relate to general government facilities such as water supply, dams, sewerage, garbage removal, public parking, street cleaning, issues ranging from promotion of recreational and cultural activities, and a large range of other activities.       

The code section gives supervisors the authority “to levy and collect an annual tax upon any property in such service district subject to local taxation to pay, either in whole or in part, the expenses and changes for providing government services. . . . “
