Phyllis Ray Garcia departed this life on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026, in Martinsburg, W. Va., after a brief struggle with kidney disease.
Phyllis was the daughter of James H. and Jewel T. Ray, formerly of Urbanna. She was born on Jan. 26, 1957 in Goldsboro, N.C.
She spent her childhood years in Crewe and Urbanna, and in Williamsport, Pa. and had most recently lived in Martinsburg, W. Va.
Phyllis was predeceased by her husband, Michael Garcia; her father, James H. (Jim) Ray, and brothers-in-law, Chic Silver and Randy Robinson.
She is survived by her mother, Jewel Ray of Irvington; her sisters, Lynne Robinson, Betsy Cobb (West) and Susan Ray (Mike); as well as niece, Sarah Sawyer; and nephew, Will Robinson.
Phyllis was smart and talented. She could hear a song on the radio, then play it by ear on the piano. She held her own home talent shows for adults when she was just a wee thing, and at age 5 spontaneously joined renowned Richmond organist Eddie Weaver at the piano during a Christmas luncheon at Miller & Rhoads tearoom. She had an almost photographic memory, and could quote from books or a Bible verse with accuracy. Phyllis lived an independent, unconventional life, but not without significant struggle. She expressed often in latter years a deep reliance on God in facing adversity.
A graveside service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 at Christ Church Parish Cemetery, 56 Christchurch Lane, Christchurch. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Kidney Foundation or the Fisher House Foundation.
