Queen crowning and shucking competitions on web; Urbanna Days offerings scheduled too

by Tom Chillemi –

In 1958 Urbanna Days was organized by town businesses to attract visitors. It’s unlikely they could have imagined how successful it would be. This event became the Urbanna Oyster Festival and in time was named the official Oyster Festival of Virginia.

In its 62 years, hundreds of thousands of visitors have come to know that Urbanna is the place to be on the first Friday and Saturday of November. This year marks the first time since its founding the Urbanna Oyster Festival will not be offered in its traditional format.

Although the 63rd annual Urbanna Oyster Festival has been mostly canceled this year due to COVID-19, two popular festival highlights were presented — and they will be available for viewing online.

The crowning of the Urbanna Oyster Festival Queen and Little Miss Spat and the Virginia Oyster Shucking Contest will be posted online on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. in an “interactive” format allowing viewers to interact with one another through comments.

Both events were conducted on Oct. 31. See related story on page B2, or skip reading this story for now and watch these events unfold in the online video.
