Motorcycle blows by at 150 mph; law chases

Rider eventually nabbed in woods in Jamaica area

A police pursuit of a motorcycle that started near Gloucester Point ended with a suspect being arrested at Church View, reported Maj. M.E. Sampson of the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

According to Sampson, the reported racing-style motorcycle reached speeds approaching 150 miles per hour attempting to elude two Virginia State Police troopers as the rider zoomed north on U.S. Route 17 followed by a trooper.

The MCSO got a call from the State Police at 2:15 p.m. on May 11, advising a second trooper was waiting at Woods Crossroads in upper Gloucester County and intended to attempt to stop the motorcycle rider. However, the rider blew past the trooper and continued north towards Middlesex.

Waiting

The State Police called the MCSO for assistance. A Middlesex deputy set up in the Church View area. As the motorcycle approached, the deputy turned on the patrol car’s emergency flashing lights.

The motorcycle rider then did a U-turn and headed south on Route 17. He then took other evasive actions, ultimately going south on the north bound lanes of Route 17.

Police spotted the riderless green motorcycle in the area of Virginia Motor Speedway in the Jamaica community, and assumed the rider was hiding in the woods. Middlesex deputies set up a perimeter to contain the suspect where it was believed he was hiding.

Maj. Sampson called the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office to get a tracking dog but it was not available. A State Police tracking dog was called for.

Tip

A MCSO dispatcher received an anonymous tip that someone had been seen walking through the woods going south near Big John’s Store.

When the State Police dog arrived, authorities broadcast that the dog was present and that lawmen told the suspect to come out of the woods. He surrendered.

Police arrested Luke R. Carambia, 23, of Gloucester County.

According to Gloucester General District Court records, Carambia is charged with felony eluding, two misdemeanor charges of speeding in excess of 85 miles per hour, passing two vehicles abreast, and five other charges.

A hearing is set for Aug. 21 in Gloucester General District Court.
