Middlesex Lady Chargers make history
The Middlesex High School (MHS) Lady Chargers closed out a truly historic volleyball season, finishing with an impressive 25-3 overall record, capturing both the district and regional championships, and making their first-ever appearance in a VHSL Class 1 state final.
What made this run even more remarkable was the youth of the team. Despite having a roster filled with underclassmen, the leadership of five influential seniors — Karadee Anderson, McKenzie Clarke, Kaitlyn Hargrove, Carly Jessie, and Courtney Jessie — set the tone from day one. Their experience, work ethic, and commitment took the program through a complete culture shift. Coaches describe it as a “360-degree turnaround” that reshaped not only how the team competed, but how they connected as a family.

“This group became sisters,” the coaching staff reflected. “The trust and love they built off the court directly made them better on the court. It was one of the most joyful seasons we’ve ever had the privilege to coach.”
New heights
The Chargers posted statement wins throughout the year, including high-energy battles against Rappahannock of Warsaw, Northumberland, and Lancaster, highlighting the rapid improvement of volleyball across the region. Each matchup showcased the Lady Chargers resiliency, balanced skill, and desire to elevate their program to new heights.
When the Lady Chargers took the floor for the state championship on Nov. 22 at the Salem Civic Center, the magnitude of the moment wasn’t lost on anyone. For a team experiencing the biggest stage for the first time, nerves played their part, and the outcome wasn’t what they had hoped. But even in defeat to Giles, the Chargers gained something invaluable. “We didn’t get to display our full talent that night,” the staff said, “but we got our feet wet, and that matters. We will be back.”
Future
With five major contributors graduating, next year’s team will face the challenge of stepping into leadership roles and continuing the cultural standard that carried them this far. Fortunately, the future looks bright. Middlesex returns a deep group of young, skilled athletes who are only going to get stronger, more confident, and more prepared for big moments.

As the program looks forward, one thing is clear: this isn’t the end — it’s the beginning of a new era for Middlesex volleyball.
“We are very excited to continue to watch MHS volleyball grow,” the program shared. “And we are so thankful for the exponential amount of community support we received this year.”
With momentum on their side and a community behind them, the Lady Chargers are poised to keep making history.
