The Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity volleyball team is 11-2 after suffering a 3-2 loss at Lancaster on Monday, and a loss against Peninsula Catholic in Saturday’s Battle of the Bay Tournament.
In the tournament, the Lady Chargers swept Christchurch School, Colonial Beach and Nandua — each in two sets — but lost to Peninsula Catholic in two sets.
On Monday, the Lady Chargers won the first two sets at Lancaster, but the Lady Red Devils battled back to win the 5-set match. Earlier in the season, Middlesex had defeated visiting Lancaster in three sets.
On Tuesday the Lady Chargers won at King and Queen Central.
“The team has really continued to grow as this season has progressed,” said Lady Charger Assistant Coach Laura Stamm. “We’ve been putting a lot of emphasis on blocking and defense, and we’re starting to see that work show up more consistently in matches.”
Learning
Coach Stamm said the tournament loss to Peninsula Catholic is something the team is using as a learning opportunity. “It wasn’t the result we wanted, but now we get to see how the girls respond, make adjustments, and bounce back from some adversity,” she said.
Outside of the one tournament loss, Stamm said she’s “really proud of the way they’ve played and competed throughout the season so far. They’ve worked hard, stayed together, and we feel like there’s still a lot of room for this group to keep getting better.”
The Lady Chargers are playing all games away since the floor of MHS’s John S. Clements Memorial Gymnasium was flooded due to heavy rain.
The Lady Chargers are scheduled to play at Northumberland on Monday, Oct. 28, and at King William on Oct. 29. The junior varsity plays at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity plays at 7 p.m.
