MHS JVs (boys) down K&Q
The Middlesex High School (MHS) junior varsity boys basketball team defeated the King and Queen Royal Tigers 34-32 on December 17 and lost 72-32 to Lancaster on December 18.
Against King & Queen, the Chargers were paced by Montrell Oakley, Geion Reed and Brandon Barney, who scored 9 points apiece. Phillip Hart and Cameron Bunns contributed 3 points each and Jakim Lomax had 1 point.
Against Lancaster, MHS was paced by Oakley’s 12 points. Reed had 11 points; Barney, 4 points; Hart and Cameron Bunns, 2 apiece; and Lomax, 1.
The MHS JVs will host Hampton Roads Academy at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, and will travel to West Point on January 7, for a 5:30 p.m. game.
MHS JVs (girls) edge Devils
On December 18 the Middlesex JV Lady Charger basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter for a 21-20 win over Lancaster at MHS in Saluda.
The JV Lady Chargers led 7-3 after the first quarter and 11-6 at the half. In the third quarter Lancaster outscored Middlesex 10-2 and held a 16-13 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Middlesex battled back in the fourth quarter and got a layup from Kaylynn Darnell that cut the LHS lead to 20-19.
With 2 seconds left in the game. Kaydence Congleton was fouled and made both foul shots to result in Middlesex’s 21-20 win.
For Middlesex, Congleton led the way with 8 points, 10 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block; Kaylynn Darnell, 7 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals; Geriyah Cooke, 4 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal; Jovanya Chandler, 2 points, 2 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 assist; Skyler Darnell, 7 rebounds; Triniti Muse, 5 rebounds; Sydney Rader, 1 rebound; and Kendall Lucas, 1 rebound.
Mathews 30, Middlesex 28
On December 20 visiting Mathews stiffened its defense in the fourth quarter to defeat the JV Lady Chargers 30-28. Middlesex played an aggressive first half and led 21-13 at the break. Although Mathews outscored Middlesex 9-6 in the third quarter, Middlesex had a 27-22 lead going into the fourth quarter. However, in the fourth quarter Mathews outscored Middlesex 8-1 for the 30-28 win.
For Middlesex, Kaylynn Darnell had 16 points and 3 steals; Geriyah Cooke, 4 points, 12 rebounds, 1 steal; Skyler Landon, 4 points, 8 rebounds; Chelsey Holmes, 4 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals; Triniti Muse, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist; Laniya Hundley, 1 steal; and Jovonya Chandler, 1 rebound.
On Tuesday, January 7, the Middlesex girls teams will host West Point. The JV game begins at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity game follows at 7 p.m.
