Reduced height Rappahannock River span
cheaper, but could restrict some vessels
At a recent meeting between Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Middlesex County officials concerning a new Rappahannock River bridge between Greys Point and White Stone, a proposal to cut its cost by lowering the height of the span by 10 feet was discussed. The current bridge is 110 feet tall.
A 10-foot cut in height “might” impact at least one incoming sailing vessel. The schooner tall-ship Lynx that annually sails to the Urbanna Oyster Festival has a mast height of 94 feet.
