Since the beginning of English settlement in Middlesex County in 1668, agriculture and the cultivating of land has been centerstage in the economic life of county citizens.
The way Middlesex County farmers grow things has evolved from the county’s beginnings of growing tobacco for an international tobacco market to growing soybeans, corn and wheat for national and international markets.
Over the years, Middlesex County farmers have been profiled as pioneers and standouts in the farming community. In 1976, Southeast Farm Press featured local farmer the late Andrew Kirby, his sons and county Extension Service agent W.D. Edwards in the weekly print edition.
