Purple-blue light signifying Lent streams from a window on a recent evening at the historic Lower United Methodist Church in Hartfield. Churches use purple lights primarily to signify the liturgical seasons of Lent and Advent, representing penance, preparation and royalty. It acts as a somber, reflective tone for spiritual reflection, fasting and anticipation of Christ’s coming or resurrection. Additionally, purple recalls the robe placed on Jesus by soldiers during His passion.
