Govt. shutdown means some benefits unavailable

The Middlesex Department of Social Services (DSS) is notifying residents that because of the federal government shutdown that began Oct. 1, SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits for November may be delayed or not issued.

Why this is happening

Federal funding for SNAP must be approved by Congress.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has instructed states not to submit files for November benefits at this time.

This means states cannot guarantee when or if November benefits will be issued.

This is a nationwide issue affecting all SNAP households and cannot be appealed.

What to expect

October benefits were approved before the shutdown and will be sent as scheduled.

If the shutdown ends soon, November benefits may only be slightly delayed.

If it continues, benefits could be delayed or suspended entirely.

New applications filed on or after Oct. 16 may only receive partial October benefits and no November benefits until funding resumes

The Middlesex Department of Social Services office continues to process SNAP applications and renewals, but November benefits depend on federal action. We appreciate your patience and will share updates as soon as new information becomes available.

How the public can help

We invite anyone who is able to support neighbors in need by donating to Hands Across Middlesex. Your help ensures that local families continue to have access to food during this time.
