Neighbors on Middlesex County’s Montague Island missed the running of the Kentucky Derby so much that they decided to create their own derby Saturday — the first Jamaica Derby, named for Middlesex’s Jamaica community. Instead of racehorses, they used golf carts.
After climbing onto the saddle of their carts, they created the appropriate atmosphere by sipping mint julep beverages and singing “My Old Kentucky Home.” Calls were issued for “riders up” and a posting bugle call started things off.
