Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews work on damaged railings Monday on the Beryl R. (Dick) Newman Memorial Bridge across Urbanna Creek. The bridge, built in 1957, was the first bridge in the state constructed using pre-stressed concrete both in the deck beams and the supporting pilings. The high level fixed span is 1,052 feet in length with waterway clearance of 20 feet vertically and 40 feet horizontally. It eliminated the need for a drawbridge feature to allow boats to go under the bridge. The concrete bridge replaced a 1930s wooden draw bridge.
