COVID-19’s reach still felt in schools

by Larry Chowning –

COVID-19 continues to be an issue in the Middlesex County Public Schools system as 18 positive cases were in the buildings and buses and there were 37 close contacts that resulted in quarantines during the week of Jan. 22 to 28.

“As we continue to see higher levels of COVID-19 cases in the community, we are beginning to see a slight decrease in our schools,” said MCPS Superintendent Dr. Tracy Seitz in an email to parents on Saturday.

This is the second week MCPS has seen a decline in COVID-19 cases in the schools after a high week of 21 positive cases and 68 individuals placed in quarantine for the week of Jan.

“We ask that you continue to encourage good habits within your families and continue to monitor for the COVID-19 symptoms (as stated in the email).  Based on communication with families these symptoms very closely mimic other very common illnesses or allergies.

The CDC offers tips to keep children healthy during this time. Additionally the Virginia Department of Education’s produced ‘COVID-19: A Parent Guide for School Age Children’ as an additional resource to families. Please know that we are here to support our families at all times. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

“Thanks for your continued partnership. We are in this together!”
