“A serviceman dies twice. When his breath goes away and he dies once. The second time he dies is if people forget him,” said Reuben Waller, guest speaker at the annual Veterans Day luncheon at Christ Church Parish on Friday, Nov. 10.
The Veterans Day luncheon, sponsored by the Christ Church Parish Fellowship Committee, was packed with Middlesex County veterans who served their country in the military.
ROTC members presented the colors and Mark Parsons, dean of faculty and chairman of Visual and Performing Arts at Christchurch School, led the group in singing patriotic songs.
Organizers were Mary Landgraf and Bev Hart. Landgraf welcomed the more than 100 veterans attending the meal and the Rev. Stuart Wood, rector at Christ Church, opened the meal with prayer and blessing.
After the meal, Middlesex County Rotary Club member Jim Knupp talked about the club’s “Heroes of Flags” that is on display along General Puller Highway (Route 33) in front of Christ Church also honoring veterans.
As an expression of gratitude to the veterans, Annie Bui and Quy (Frances) Duong thanked all the veterans for their service and the luncheon ended with taps performed by Deltaville’s Toby Gillie.
