Church Briefs: August 14, 2025

The annual “One Community Under God” worship experience will take place on Sunday, Oct. 5, at the Urbanna firehouse (the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department station) at 11 a.m. Ten churches in Middlesex County will be hosting this event for everyone to gather as a unified community to worship together.

The One Community Under God worship event includes song, scripture, prayer and sharing the word of God. A fellowship meal will be offered following the service for all to enjoy.

Individuals and families with or without children are encouraged to attend. County citizens and visitors are all welcome! Dress is casual.

All campers, community members and vacationers are invited to attend the community Sunday worship service at Bethpage Camp-Resort at 9 a.m. Bethpage is located at 4685 Old Virginia St., just west of Urbanna. The non-denominational Christian service is offered in the campground’s amphitheater.

Bob Heerema, a former Orthodox Presbyterian Church minister, will be the speaker for the Aug. 17 worship service. Heerema is a volunteer with The Foundry in Middlesex County. Charles “Bunny” Dunlevy of Urbanna United Methodist Church, will provide the music.

The congregation will be encouraged to join together in singing. Dress is casual.

This is the 44th year that Urbanna Baptist Church and Bethpage have cooperatively hosted the annual summer services from Easter until the end of September. Many churches throughout the county join together; hear various ministers speak; and have fellowship and join in music.

Make-A-Way and Deliverance Full Gospel Baptist Church in Urbanna will celebrate the 26th anniversary of pastors Apostle Dr. Thomas J. Ransom and Dr. Prophet Edna Ransom on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 3 p.m.

The Rev. Alvenus Williams Jr. will present the Spoken Word at the 10 a.m. service. There is a second service at 3 p.m. The worship leader will be Cynthia Fisher. Pastor Vincent Pryor of New Mount Zion Baptist Church of Gloucester will present the Spoken Word, along with his choir and the Mount Zion Church family.

The vessels of Praise Dancers of Zion Popular will also render dance selections.

All are welcome as we celebrate the Good Shepherds of Make-A-Way and Deliverance Full Gospel Baptist Church.

The Pastor’s Aide Committee includes Evangelist Virginia Ward, 804-694-7996; Deacon Garland Carter, 804-695-6547; and Evangelist Oriton Robinson, 804-246-7654.


New Hope Fellowship, a church in Hartfield, Compassion International and the 95Network will conduct a Healthy Church Conference on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • A clear mission.
  • Vision.
  • Effective communication.

Congregants at Lower United Methodist Church (LUMC), 120 Lower Church Road, Hartfield, invite everyone to join them this Sunday for Breakfast with Friends and their casual worship service. They will gather in the LUMC Fellowship Hall at 9:45 a.m. for breakfast at 10 a.m. They’ll remain in the hall for worship at 10:30 a.m. Bring a dish, bring a friend!

All are welcome to join them for a time of group prayer, every Wednesday at 4 p.m.

“Seasons of Tapestry” is a weekly women’s prayer seminar taught by Bonnie Shannonhouse open to Christian women of all denominations. It meets at noon every Thursday via Zoom. The sessions will also be recorded and available on the website for viewing at your convenience.

Bonnie Shannonhouse learned the art of prayer from the Rev. Mother Virginia of All Saints Benedictine Convent. Together, they taught prayer for the Diocese of Maryland until Mother’s full retirement.

Bonnie began Tapestry in 1997 with the first Day of Prayer at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. She taught women to pray in seminars from shore to shore and abroad for more than 10 years.
