DELTAVILLE PREPARES FOR BIG RACE

In this “drone’s eye” view, the main group of runners surges forward on General Puller Highway at the start of last year’s Deltaville 5K. Two-hundred-and-eighty-one runners competed in and finished the race, according to Kevin Hupp with Mettle Events, which will also record times at this year’s race. They were divided into several “flights” based on their expected finishing range of times. Several dozen more participated in the Kids Fun Run. Organizers predict up to 400 people will participate in the 11th running of the Deltaville 5K and Kids Fun Run set for Saturday, July 2, starting and finishing in front of the Deltaville Community Association building at 17147 General Puller Highway in Deltaville.

The Kids Fun Run will start at 7:15 a.m., immediately followed by the 5K, a 3.1-mile foot race through Deltaville, which is expected to start around 7:30 a.m.

Online registration at https://dvl5k.com will remain open through Thursday, June 30. Walk-up registration is available during packet pickup at the event site from 4-7 p.m. Friday, July 1, and 6-7 a.m. Saturday, July 2. Online registration is $30 for the 5K and $15 for the Fun Run. Walk-up registration is $35 for the 5K and $20 for the Fun Run.

The family-friendly, rain-or-shine event is a great way to celebrate Independence Day.

The Jackson Creek Course will follow General Puller Highway (Route 33) and Lover’s Lane and will be completed by 9 a.m. At 7:30 a.m., expect a minor delay on Route 33 at the beginning of the 5K. Lover’s Lane will be closed during the race.

Volunteers needed

“If people would like to volunteer, they can email me at svheyman1@gmail.com or call me at 804-824-4524,” Lukens said. “We have most volunteer spots filled, but always need more help and I’m sure some people would love to race instead of volunteer! I would also love to have people’s numbers for future years.”

Event benefits DCA

The Deltaville 5K and Kids Fun Run began as a fundraiser to aid recovery from the 2011 tornado that ripped through Deltaville. Each year, all proceeds are given back to the community through the Deltaville Community Association, a nonprofit organization that operates multiple recreational venues near its building, including the Ricky Taylor Memorial Community Swimming Pool, tennis, pickleball, basketball courts and a children’s playground. A little bit off General Puller Highway, it also operates the historic Deltaville Ballpark…
