Virginia Motor Speedway closes dirt track operations

Mud bog facility to still host spring and fall 2025 events

Virginia Motor Speedway President/Owner Bill Sawyer has decided to cease operations for the dirt track after 25 seasons of racing under his ownership, according to a VMS news release issued last week.

“With a severe financial climate since the pandemic, the cost of operation has increased yearly due to out-of-control inflation,” Sawyer said. “I wish there was an answer, but this decision wasn’t made easy. I am very sorry to have to make this decision.”

However, The Pit at Virginia Motor Speedway will still operate and host two apparently final mud bog / Mega Truck events in 2025:

  • Mud Mayhem on May 17, 2025
  • Run-A-Muck Mud Bog on Oct. 4, 2025.

The speedway is a half-mile dirt oval track located on U.S. Route 17, eight miles north of Saluda in Middlesex County’s Jamaica community.
