A special called meeting of the Urbanna Town Council is set for today at 6 p.m at the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department in Urbanna to discuss replacing the closed Urbanna Town Marina bridge.

The town has received a $4.4 million verbal estimate from a Richmond engineering firm to replace the 16-foot bridge leading to the town marina. The town closed the bridge in December 2025 on recommendation of engineering firm Whitman, Requardt and Associates (WRA).

The Friday, Feb. 27, letter from WRA to Town Administrator Ted Costin estimates engineering services to total $900,000, which does not include construction, or other services that WRA does not provide, such as surveying and “Geotechincal Boring.”

At council’s meeting, Jeremy Schlussel, senior vice president with WRA, was scheduled to review the proposed scope of work and answer questions from the town council.

Part of the earth around the bridge washed out in October 2025. The town reportedly contacted three engineering firms, but only WRA responded.

In 2011, a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) inspection recommended a 10,000-pound weight limit be placed on the bridge, which was done.
