Rebate checks going out now

The check is in the mail.

Middlesex County Treasurer Traci Wright said Monday that 7,593 personal property rebate checks valued at about $823,000 are scheduled to be mailed out to county taxpayers this week and next.

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) approved on a 4-1 vote in January to provide a 25% “one time” rebate to county personal property taxpayers by returning surplus tax revenues collected from qualifying vehicles.

“It was not a simple process.” Wright said. My staff (of three) had to put in a lot of overtime hours.”

Earlier in December, MCBS voted to extend the tax due date on personal property taxes from Dec. 5, 2022 to Feb. 6, 2023 to give relief to taxpayers with skyrocketing personal property tax bills.

The board voted in January to approve the 25% rebate, which included “yea” votes from MCBS board chairman and Pinetop District supervisor Lud Kimbrough, Harmony Village Supervisor Reggie Williams, Jamaica District Supervisor Wayne Jessie and Saluda District Supervisor Don Harris. Hartfield Supervisor John Koontz voted against the measure, saying the county had many needs for those funds.
