Phyllis Topping Brice, 96, of Roanoke and Topping, passed away on Friday, July 31, 2026.
She was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, entrepreneur and lifelong learner. Phyllis will be remembered for her sharp mind, adventurous spirit, business acumen, and appreciation for the joys of life.
Born on July 17, 1930, in Roanoke, Phyllis was the daughter of John and Jamie Topping.
For more than 35 years, Phyllis owned and operated P&L Estate and Tag Sales, building a respected estate sale business through hard work, determination, and an entrepreneurial spirit. Her career reflected the independence and initiative that defined much of her life.
She embraced opportunities to see the world traveling whenever she could and developing a love for scuba diving. Equally at home around a card table, Phyllis earned the distinction of Bridge Life Master, an achievement that reflected her intelligence, strategic thinking, and lifelong enjoyment of the game.
Although she traveled widely, her favorite place was always “the Rivah.” She enjoyed spending time on the porch of her home in Topping, playing cards, visiting with family and friends, and enjoying the breeze. It was where she found peace and where she was happiest.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Judge James Brice, and their eldest son, James “Jimmy” Brice Jr.
She is survived by her sons, Stephen Brice and his wife, Victoria, and Michael Brice and his wife, Luba; her grandchildren, Taryn Brice Rowland (Aaron), Melissa Brice, and James “Trey” Brice III; and her great-grandson, Bastian Rowland.
Those who knew Phyllis will remember her as intelligent, independent, and more than a little defiant in the best sense of the word. She approached life on her own terms and left behind a legacy that will be fondly remembered by her family and friends.
The family will conduct a private service. Condolences may be shared at www.Oakeys.com. Oakey’s Funeral Service South Chapel of Roanoke was in charge of arrangements.
