Friends of the Rappahannock officials overwatch the planting of oyster shells on Urbanna Creek on Friday, Sept. 29, as part of the “Restore Urbanna Creek” program. The shells are being planted to build a reef as a clutch to encourage oysters to grow along the shoreline. Oysters are a filter feeder and each oyster can filter nearly 50 gallons of water a day to clean up the creek.
