For the second time since 2022,  Middlesex High School’s (MHS) volleyball team has won the Region 1A Tournament.

As Region 1A Tournament champions, Middlesex will host the quarter-finals of the State Class 1 Tournament match on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 3 p.m. in John S. Clements Memorial Gymnasium when they take on Buffalo Gap, the Region 1B runner-up.

This is the Charger girls seventh trip to the state tournament since Brian Walton became MHS volleyball coach nine years ago. In 2024, Middlesex was Region 1A runner-up, but survived the first round of the State Class 1 Tournament defeating Region 1B champs Altavista Combined School at Lynchburg. It was their first state tournament win.

  • The state semi-finals are set for Tuesday, Nov. 18 at the higher seed.
  • The State Class 1 finals will be Nov. 22 at the Salem Civic Center.

On Tuesday, Nov. 11, the Lady Chargers swept Lancaster in three sets, 25-14, 25-22, and 25-16. Sophomore serving ace Hannah Lambert served for 17 consecutive points in the third set, before Lancaster got a point.

In the Region 1A Tournament semi-final on Nov. 6, MHS eliminated Northumberland, 25-18, 25-22, and 25-23.

Regular season champs

Middlesex (24-2) also was the Tidewater District and Region 1A regular season champs. Lancaster, who the Lady Chargers defeated twice in regular season play, finished in second place. The Lady Chargers’ only two losses this season were in non-district play in the Battle of the Bay Invitational Tournament when they lost to Lancaster and Peninsula Catholic.

Lancaster will travel to play the Region 1B champions on Saturday.
