Middlesex High School’s girls and boys cross country teams participated in two meets last week and produced some noteworthy performances. The MHS girls team placed first at the Oct. 15 Northumberland Meet and Invitational and the MHS boys team captured runner-up honors.
Charger girl Keichan Layne was the top female finisher, running the 5K (3.1 mile) course in 21 minutes, 49 seconds. She was closely followed by the second place finisher, Charger girl Miko Layne, whose time was 21 minutes, 58 seconds. Other individual times by Middlesex girls cross country team members include, Aleena Reza, 23:28; Makayla Moore, 23:44; Elsie Williams, 23:49; Olivia Hoffield, 31:42; and Alayna Smith, 50:48.
Darius Jones had the fastest time for Middlesex’s boy harriers at the Northumberland meet, finishing second with a 17 minute, 40 second time. Other individual times by MHS boys cross country team members include Gunnar Marston, 18:03; Tanner Janisko, 18:04; Kevin Turner, 18:50; Chris Butler, 18:58; Cayden McDearmon, 20:38; Allen Leonard, 21:20; Mason Kiku, 21:48; Matthew Williams, 24:37; and Josh Huntley, 28:21.
Virginia Showcase
At the Oct. 18 Virginia Showcase meet at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, the Laynes again turned in the top times for the Charger girls, with Miko finishing 85th with a 22:35 time and Keichan finishing 95th with a 22:49 time. It should be noted that this meet featured a huge field of competitors — 300 girls and 34 full teams.
For the Charger boys, Darius Jones was the fastest, finishing 56th with a time of 17:54; and second fastest was Gunnar Marston, finishing 80th with an 18:22 time. This was in a field of 380 boys and 43 full teams.
Next up is the Region 1A cross country meet set for Thursday, Oct. 30. The time and location will be announced later.
