Hummel Field’s current runway (the one with painted stripes) will close forever on Monday, Aug. 8 as construction of the realigned runway continues. The Topping airport’s new runway will be 1,000 feet longer than the old runway and aligned so planes fly over water instead of houses.
Project manager and pilot Oscar Barber said he plans to have the new runway open by Sept. 1.
