My wife and I decided to spend a day at this year’s Virginia State Fair. It’s not something we do because we yearn to be flung about on stomach-churning rides. My wife looks forward to the fair out of a deep appreciation for the beautiful quilts and embroidery on display.
As far as my interest, I really enjoy watching ducklings use a little slide to splash into a pool of water. (I’m easily entertained.) At a previous fair, my wife — a country girl — challenged me to milk a cow. The animal’s owner was helpful and encouraging. That accomplishment, I decided, was well worth the price of admission.
So, before setting off to Doswell, we stopped at our financial institution to get some cash for the fair. Somehow, we had missed the message that, from the front gate to any of the rides or food stands, cash was not being accepted. Only credit or debit cards were welcome.
