David “Troy” Smith Sr., 55, of Urbanna, passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
Born on Oct. 24, 1969, in Richmond, Troy was the beloved son of the late Lacy and Daisy Smith.
Troy graduated from Fair Haven Union High School in Fair Haven, Vt. in 1988 and soon returned to Chesterfield to work alongside his family in their painting business.
In 1990, he answered a higher calling and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, proudly serving his country during Operation Desert Storm. A Marine through and through, Troy embodied the values of honor, loyalty and protection especially when it came to those he loved.
Troy had a deep passion for history, particularly Civil War history and the legacy of the South. He held a deep respect for figures like Robert E. Lee and could often be found researching or having conversations on the subject. But more than anything, Troy loved his family and his fellow Marines, with whom he shared a bond that lasted long beyond their service together.
He lived life boldly and fully, whether in the woods hunting, casting a line on the waters of The Dragon or the Bay Bridge Tunnel, or gathering with loved ones. A natural sharpshooter, Troy found peace when joined by his sons, brothers and nephews. He never missed a birthday or celebration and had a special way of making each person in his life feel remembered and valued.
Troy is survived by his sons, David Troy Smith Jr. and Ryan “Cole” Smith; his brothers, Lacy “Henry” Smith Jr (Christina), Ernest “Charles” Smith Sr (Julie), Michael Brian Smith (Laura); and his sister, Elizabeth “Betsy” Virginia Pyle (John).
He is also remembered fondly by nieces, nephews, extended family and friends and a close-knit circle of Marine brothers. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Lucas Andrew Smith, and his parents Lacy and Daisy Smith.
There will be a private family service conducted on a future date.
