Christ Church Parish (Episcopal) in Christchurch continued its annual tradition of celebrating Epiphany with a brief religious service and bonfire on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 6 p.m. Located on the large front lawn of the church, attendees from the church and the community at large waited patiently until representatives of the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department carefully set the pattern for igniting the large pile of dried Christmas trees and greens. Suddenly the night sky was aglow with the burning of Holiday greenery officially marking the end of the old year 2025 and confirming the arrival of the new year 2026.
Epiphany, also known as Three King’s Day, represents the arrival of the three Wise Men at the Christ Child’s manger and their delivery of gifts to him. Actually, Jan. 6 also marks the 12th day of Christmas. Epiphany, widely celebrated in European countries, is listed as a national holiday as well as a religious holiday in many countries.
As the enormous bonfire burned, glowing and cheery faces indulged in traditional sweets, hot chocolate and warm cider. The fire provided the warmth, and the excitement prompted the smiles.
“Hello 2026 and Happy New Year to all,” a church rep said.
