M. Hammond’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer stuns Mathews 64-63 

The Middlesex High boys varsity basketball team posted two impressive wins in recent action. On January 21 the Chargers downed King and Queen 71-65 and on January 24 the Chargers earned a thrilling 64-63 win over Mathews. Both were Tidewater District games.

Mathews rallied to take a 61-59 lead late in the fourth quarter. Charger Jomari Gonzalez hit a driving layup with 9.4 seconds remaining but Mathews went the length of the court and took a 63-61 lead with 5 seconds remaining. After a Middlesex timeout, Charger guard Mike Hammond took the inbounds pass the length of the court and hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer for the win.
