No 2024 fireworks show for Urbanna to celebrate Fourth

Urbanna’s skies will be dark for the annual Independence Day-themed celebration.

“It looks like we’re not going to have fireworks this year,” Ted Costin, Urbanna town administrator, told the town council at its March 28 meeting.

The problem boils down to the inability to get insurance for the launch site.

For years the fireworks have been launched from the Rosegill property across Urbanna Creek. However, the property owners’ insurance will not cover the discharge of fireworks.

The Urbanna Boat Parade is still scheduled.

Large barge

Some localities use a barge anchored in water to shoot off the fireworks. However, the barge would need to be 40 feet by 60 feet, Costin said.

A barge of that size would need a tug to move it. That could cost $25,000, above the cost of the fireworks, said Urbanna Mayor Bill Goldsmith.

The town had a $14,000 contract for fireworks with a company they had not used before. The company asked for insurance, leading to the Rosegill property owners finding out they are not insured for fireworks.

Boat parade

Even without the fireworks, plans are already being made for activities in the town’s Taber Park and the new town pool there — plus, the boat parade is still on.

There will be food trucks, patriotic music, games and free swimming for all at the new town pool.
