Public can sound off on proposed new tax on cigarettes

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors agreed in June to conduct public hearings at its July 6 night meeting that will start at 7 p.m. to receive public comments on the county joining the regional Chesapeake Bay Cigarette Tax Board and on adopting a local cigarette tax ordinance.

The Virginia State Legislature passed a number of bills recently that allow counties to implement certain taxes and one in particular was a cigarette tax.

Middlesex is considering joining the Chesapeake Bay Cigarette Tax Board, along with Westmoreland and Lancaster counties and the corporate towns of Montross and Urbanna…
