Supervisors approve $36,000 e-tablets buy for elections officers

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) approved on March 2 a $36,000 appropriation to adhere to a Virginia State Board of Elections (VSBE) mandate requiring the Middlesex County Electoral Board (MCEB) to upgrade electronic poll-books.

MCEB Chairman Barbara Cockrell reported to the board that the replacement of poll-books is mandated because the current laptop equipment used has been “decertified” by the state board of VSBE and cannot be used in upcoming elections.

Cockrell also said at the March 2 meeting that even though it is a VSBE mandate the state will not contribute any funds to pay for the new equipment.

Up until 2009, poll-books, with required information for a voter to vote, were in a paper copy format…
