Happy Halloween

Halloween is this Saturday, Oct. 31, but the COVID-19 pandemic is making this year’s celebration of the holiday a little different — it prompted Urbanna town officials to ban trick-or-treating. Still, one may see a scary figure or two along the streets of Urbanna, including at this impressive display around the northern end of Rappahannock Avenue — where it intersects with Kent Street. Courtesy of Sean Hackney, his wife, Marnie Harte, and their son, Matthew Harte Hackney, 11, there are multiple giant spiders climbing about, even one chasing a skeleton (above) pedaling a bicycle. Smiling witches (left) nearby stir a cauldron. “We really wanted to bring some extra fun and a little happiness to everyone during the pandemic,” Hackney said. It is the family’s first Halloween in their Urbanna home. There are some COVID-19 aware Halloween events going on at churches and other locations around the county — see stories, pages B2 and B6.
