Was just dredged out in May; officials want to study problem before re-trying

After the public boat ramp at Mill Creek Landing in Wake was dredged in May, the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors learned at its regular monthly meeting on July 7 that the area in and around the boat ramp is refilling with sand.

At the end of May, 1,800 cubic yards of sand were removed from in and around the ramp by local marine contractors who volunteered their time and efforts. There was no maintenance cost for the dredging to the county.

Hartfield representative John Koontz informed supervisors a recent bathymetric survey of the Wake boat ramp revealed sand is rapidly moving back in and around the facility.

“A great deal of work went into getting permission to have the ramp dredged,” said Koontz. “I do not want to waste anymore goodwill until we can find an engineering solution.”
