Mill Creek Landing set to be re-dredged

After the meeting on the approval of the fiscal year (FY) 2021-2022 county budget Thursday, April 29, the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) authorized Hartfield Supervisor John Koontz to move forward with plans to dredge sand from in front of the Mill Creek boat ramp in Wake.

A year ago in May, Koontz spearheaded the dredging of 1,800 cubic yards of sand from in front of the ramp with all volunteer assistants from marine contractors in the county.

The ramp is one of the most well-used in the county and maintained by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR). DWR officials dredged sand from the ramp a few years ago, prior to last year’s dredging, and it quickly silted in. 

In May of last year, Koontz took it upon himself to temporarily solve the problem. Since then the area has silted back and he has agreed to take the problem on again. With the help of area marine contractors who volunteered their time and equipment, the job was done last year at no cost to county taxpayers and Koontz said it can be done again…
