A special variety of soybeans, valued for their healthy oil, are being grown locally.

“High-oleic soybean oil” is a healthy alternative to partially hydrogenated oils, which have largely been phased out.

Hampstead Farm in Remlik harvested its high oleic soybeans in the fall but stored them until the Perdue AgriBusiness Kilmarnock Grain Elevator was ready for shipments of high oleic soybeans, which are kept segregated from regular soybeans, explained Jason Bray of Hampstead Farm in Remlik, VA.

America produces 100% of the world’s high-oleic soybean oil, according to U.S. Soy. Farmers in 16 states currently grow the valued soybeans that can generate higher returns. Annual production has increased 28 times since 2017.
