The Middlesex High School (MHS) Charger varsity basketball team (6-4, 3-1) lost its first Tidewater District game of the season with a 58-55 loss to archrival Mathews High School Blue Devils on Thursday, Jan. 2.
The Chargers Achilles heel came from the charity strip as MHS shot just 50% from the free throw line missing eight of 16 attempts, resulting in Middlesex losing the game by just 3 points.
The Chargers were paced by JaQuan Griffin, who scored 17 points; and Nielson McMinn, who contributed 13 points. Shane Glenn scored just under double figures with 9 points, Henry Fleet, 6; Davonte Griffin, 5; Donovan Jones and Bryson Bulgin, 2 points each; and Nathan Powell, 1 point.
Both teams went into the game with undefeated records in Tidewater District competition.
The Chargers played Charles City on Tuesday night and will travel to West Point to take on the Pointers on Thursday, Jan. 9, and at Hampton Roads Academy on Friday, Jan. 10.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
