The Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity Lady Charger softball team picked up two mercy-rule wins last week against King & Queen Central and Chincoteague, and lost a classic against defending Class 2 state champion King William.

King William 3, Middlesex   2

In an evenly matched contest in Saluda on April 22, the King William Lady Cavaliers outlasted the Lady Chargers by a score of 3-2. The game was a pitchers’ duel. Magen Daniels went the distance in the circle for Middlesex. She surrendered no earned runs on six hits and racked up 10 strikeouts.

Neither team could get anything going offensively against the opposing pitcher until the fourth inning. Lady Charger Rylee Buck led off the fourth inning with a single to left field. The throw back into the infield was overthrown and Buck advanced all the way to third base. Courtney Jessie followed that up with a single to left, scoring Buck and Middlesex led 1-0.

King William would answer right back in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of two infield throwing errors by the Lady Chargers to take a 3-1 lead. The Chargers fought back in the bottom of the sixth. Libby Oliver led things off with a single to center, Courtney Jessie drew a walk, advancing Oliver to second. Kayleigh Moye then singled up the middle to score Oliver to make the score 3-2, King William. Both teams would go down in order in the last inning to finish the game.

Middlesex 21, King & Queen 3

Middlesex went on the road to King & Queen on April 24 and had no problems taking care of the Lady Tigers.

Middlesex put up 16 runs in the first two innings to put the contest away early. The Lady Chargers racked up 19 hits.

Middlesex 15, Chincoteague 0

The Chargers took the four-hour bus ride across the Chesapeake Bay to Chincoteague on Friday, April 25, to square off against the Lady Ponies. The Middlesex bats again exploded early in the contest, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning, and they would never look back.

The Lady Chargers are at West Point today, Thursday, May 1, at 6 p.m.
