Churches in Brief: May 22, 2025

The theme this year of Harmony Grove Baptist Church’s (HGBC) annual vacation Bible school (VBS) is “True North, Trusting Jesus in a Wild World.” HGBC will host the program 5:30-8 p.m. June 8-12. The fun will include a light dinner, games, crafts and music for children ages 4-12.

On Day One, the lesson will be “When We Wonder, We Can Trust Jesus.” Day Two, the lesson will be “When We Feel Alone, We Can Trust Jesus,” Day Three, the lesson will be “When We Feel Powerless, We Can Trust Jesus,”  Day Four will feature “When We Need Hope, We can Trust Jesus,” and the final day will feature “When We Need Help, We Can Trust Jesus.”

In keeping with this year’s theme, children are encouraged to dress up in the costume of their favorite outdoor/woods animal while attending VBS.  The decorations for this year’s event is camp/outdoors/northern lights.

All children in Middlesex County ages 4-12 are welcome.


The Kingsmen Quartet is set to perform at 6 p.m. Friday, May 23, at Harmony Grove Baptist Church in Harmony Village. The group includes Alan Kendall, baritone; Brady Jones, bass; Thomas Nally, tenor; Brandon Reese, soundboard; Cole Watson, lead; and Ray Reese, manager, a longtime singer with the group. Although it is sometimes described as a quartet, these six men are associated with the group.

Among their extensive list of hits are some of gospel music’s most legendary classics — songs like “Saints Will Rise,” “The Judgment,” “Glory Road,” “Look for Me at Jesus’ Feet,” “Is That the Old Ship of Zion,” “He’s All I Need,” “The Next Cloud,” “I Can’t Even Walk Without You Holding My Hand,” “Battle Cry,”  and “When God Ran,” are but a few of the more than 100 charted classics in the career of the Kingsmen.

The community is invited and welcome to come. A love offering will be taken for the quartet.

Lebanon Baptist Church in Saluda will have its Women’s Day program on Sunday, May 25, at 3 p.m. Light refreshments will be served prior to the program at 1:30 p.m.

The Middlesex County Literary Union Executive Board will meet on Monday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m. at Union Shiloh Baptist Church in Laneview. The pastor of Union Shiloh is the Rev. Randolph Scott.


Zion Branch Baptist Church in Saluda will celebrate its 133rd church anniversary on Sunday, June 1, at noon. Bishop James A. Chalmers, pastor of Lifeline Gospel Church, Chatham, will be the guest speaker along with Lifeline’s choir.

Zion Hill Baptist Church, 10256 Indian Road, Gloucester, will have in-person worship service on Sunday, May 25, at 11 a.m. Pastor Eugene Comithier II will preach and the Male Chorus will sing.

In-person Sunday school will be offered at 9:45 a.m.

The Women’s Ministry will have a Spring Fair on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the church. This is a community event for everyone. There will be carnival games, vendors shopping, food concessions, Old City BBQ Food Truck, face painting, D.A.R.E., cornhole, bounce houses, photo booth, children’s craft area, horseback riding and a petting zoo (noon-4 p.m.)


Please join in the celebration of Women’s Day on Sunday, June 1, at 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 3971 General Puller Highway, Saluda.

The theme will be “Daughters of the Most High King.”

The Rev. Dr. Littycia Clay-Crawley will be the speaker.

The guest choir will be St. Luke Combined Choir of  West Point.

The color to wear is purple.

Christ Church Parish (Episcopal) invites everyone to a garden party on Sunday, June 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. It will take place in the Christ Church Creation Care Garden to celebrate the third anniversary. All produce grown in the garden is donated directly to the Cryer Center’s Food Bank.

Congregants at Lower United Methodist Church (LUMC), 120 Lower Church Road, Hartfield, invite everyone to join them for worship in their historic sanctuary at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The community is invited to stop by the LUMC Fellowship Hall every Wednesday between 7:30-9 a.m. for free, delicious, hand-crafted coffee or hot chocolate from God’s Aroma, a coffee ministry.

All are welcome to join them for a time of group prayer, every Wednesday at 4 p.m.

St. Paul Baptist Church in Jamaica will celebrate Women’s Day on Sunday, May 25, at 3 p.m. The Rev. Kenneth Dunn is the pastor.

The guests will include the Rev. Tina Bonney and George Robinson and The Gospel Robins of First Baptist Church of Amburg in Deltaville.

Deaconess Arlene Williams of Macedonia Baptist Church in Center Cross will be the worship leader.

Women are directed to wear pastel colors.


All campers, community members and vacationers are invited to attend the Sunday, May 25, community worship service at Bethpage Camp-Resort at 9 a.m. Bethpage is located at 4685 Old Virginia St., just west of Urbanna. The non-denominational Christian service is offered in the campground’s amphitheater.

The congregation will be encouraged to join together in singing. Dress is casual.

This is the 44th year that Urbanna Baptist Church and Bethpage have cooperatively hosted the annual summer services from Easter until the end of September. Many churches throughout the county join together, hear various ministers speak, and have fellowship and join in music.

Have you lost a spouse and are seeking support and coping skills during your time of grief and loss? An Urbanna Baptist Church (UBC) program to address this consists of a video presentation, group support, and a devotional and guide.

Program participants will meet 6:30-8 p.m. Mondays through June 23 at UBC Fellowship Hall. There is a $20 fee for registration (this includes a participant’s book). There are scholarships available for registration fees as well.
