Dozens of African-American men with Middlesex County connections served in the Civil War as members of the Union Navy or as members of the Army’s United States Colored Troops.
These veterans will be recognized at a Juneteenth program set for 3 p.m. Sunday, June 22 at Antioch Baptist Church in Saluda.
Wreaths will be placed on veterans’ graves at three local church cemeteries and persons who are descended from the veterans will be acknowledged at the event.
Some of the known Middlesex Black Civil War veterans are Elijah Banks, Jeremiah Borum, Carter Braxton, Henry Burrell, Joshua Dudley, Beverly Harris, David Harris, George H. Harris, Doctor Johnson Jr., Henry Johnson, Elijah Lively, James Lomax, Charles Thurston, Erasmus Tucker and Henry Turner, to name just a few.
