County eyes using sewer funds to avoid tax hike

MC supervisors expected to vote today on upcoming fiscal year budget

Three citizens attended the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors public hearing on Thursday, April 18, on the proposed $36 million budget for the 2024-2025 fiscal year (FY 24-25), which starts July 1.

Robert Jackson of Urbanna was the only speaker. Jackson said he was glad to see the budget with no tax increases but with all the spending the county is currently doing he wondered how it was being accomplished. “We will see down the road how all this spending will impact us,” he said.

The board is expected to vote on the budget 7 p.m. today, Thursday, April 25, seven days after the public hearing. The county, by state code, has to wait seven days from the hearing before any action can take place.

The county’s proposed budget calls for a 3% cost of living adjustment increase for all school and county employees; funds for the hiring of two new deputies and a dispatcher for the sheriff’s office; funds to support the hiring of an assistant commonwealth’s attorney; and monies for the purchase of a new $136,462 diesel powered school bus.

The board also agreed to take $488,900 out of the capital reserve line item (sewer fund) and that brought the total amount of the budget down. This helped balance the budget without dipping into the fund balance or raising taxes.
