Middle school students honor John Henry St. Clare Walker

St. Clare Walker Middle School honored John Henry St. Clare Walker by celebrating his 140th birthday on Monday, Jan. 22. During a special school-wide assembly, students and staff were reminded of St. Clare Walker’s legacy as a pioneer educator who dedicated his life to bringing education to Black citizens of Middlesex County. 

Prior to the assembly, students were given an opportunity to participate in an essay contest by responding to the prompts, “Why do we honor John Henry St. Clare Walker in the name of our school? How might his contributions in the past impact the future? What can each of us do to advance his legacy?”

After reviewing more than 200 essays, a winner from each grade level was selected. Excerpts from the winning essays were shared during the school-wide assembly…
