MHS sports heroes of yesteryear to receive recognition Saturday

In 1989, the Southside Sentinel ran a special supplement to honor the Middlesex Charger basketball team.

MHS is inviting all members of the 1988, 1989 and 1990 boys and girls basketball teams to come and be recognized.

Thirty-five years ago the Middlesex High School (MHS) Charger boys basketball team played in the finals of the Group A state tournament in one of the most exciting MHS seasons in the school’s history.

The Chargers lost in the finals to the Flucos of Fluvanna High School, 77-55, but MHS’s dream march to the state finals provides fond memories for so many MHS fans who made the trip to Charlottesville to cheer on the Chargers.

The late John Clements was head coach and his assistant coaches were the late Barron Holmes and Andrew Hence. The MHS gymnasium is named in memory of John Clements and names such as Michael Ransome, James Parker, Stan Clements, Marlon Parker and Vernon Boyd live on in the minds of those who followed the team.

This Saturday, members of the 1989 boys basketball team and the girls 1988, 1989 and 1990 teams will be honored between the junior varsity and varsity games against Christchurch Seahorses in the S. Clements Memorial Gymnasium in Saluda. The junior varsity game starts at 1 p.m. and the varsity contest will begin at 2:30 p.m. Former players are invited to arrive at 12:30 p.m. for a mingle session in the MHS cafeteria. Players that are being recognized should be in the cafeteria or gym between 1:30 and 1:45 p.m.
