Middlesex County hires its first full-time in-house engineer

by Larry Chowning –

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) recently hired Charlie Beam Jr. as the county’s first in-house staff engineer and director of utilities.

“Charlie specializes in civil projects like we have here in the county,” said Kimbrough. “We are moving forward with sewer and we need an engineer working for us to help guide us through the process. The sewer project will be his main job, but he will help us in many other ways and already has.”

Beam has been working with engineers, the sheriff and supervisors on the direction the county should go with either building a new Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office headquarters or to refurbish the 40-year-old former Lewis B. Puller Vocational Center building at Cooks Corner.

As a project coordinator/construction manager with Bowman Consulting, Beam, before taking the county position, had been working with the Middlesex County Water Authority and county officials on funding debt service repayment, and with the Department of Agriculture (USDA) on structuring loan agreements.

“He is very familiar with our county and our needs here in Middlesex,” said Kimbrough. “We feel very fortunate to have him.”
