Public’s help sought in identifying murder suspect

Authorities are seeking the public’s help in identifying a murder suspect in an Gloucester apparent home-invasion Monday, August 15. Skyler Merenda, 18, was found dead with a gunshot wound in a residence in the 4300 block of Bufflehead Drive shortly after 2 a.m., according to a Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) news release. A male, 20, also at the scene sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.

Preliminary investigation and witness interviews suggest that an unknown suspect entered the residence and began firing a weapon inside. This case is actively under investigation by the GCSO Criminal Investigations Division, along with assistance from the Virginia State Police and the Tidewater Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Residents of the Carters Cove subdivision in Gloucester were asked to check any home surveillance systems (doorbell cameras, game cameras, etc.) for pedestrian and vehicle traffic between 1 and 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 15.
