New Parking Aids Whiting Creek Access

The Whiting Creek public landing and ramp have been used by commercial crabbers and oystermen for decades. Thomas Lee Walton (above) of Urbanna brings in his morning harvest of crabs. After years of waiting, a bulkhead and parking area was built at Whiting Creek public landing and ramp at Locust Hill increasing the parking area by more than four times. On June 23 it was opened ceremonially by Middlesex County officials.

Access to the boat public landing and boat ramp on Whiting Creek at Locust Hill is much easier now that Middlesex County has created a parking area to accommodate boat trailer parking. This ramp gives public access to the Rappahannock River.

The ramp is at the end of a narrow road and before this parking area was built the only place to leave a trailer and tow vehicle was on the side of the road. And you had to get there early to get a parking place. “When the weather was good you had to go at a certain time to get a parking spot,” said Gilbert Robinson of Locust Hill. “This looks like it will be a lot better.”

Robinson, 76, has used the dock and ramp at Whiting Creek most of his life to crab and go fishing. He’d watch the tide roll in or go out so he would know when was the best time to go fishing.

Thomas Lee Walton of Urbanna is one of the many commercial watermen who use the Whiting Creek boat ramp. “They did a great job down here” for recreational boaters and watermen, he said. “There’s a lot more room.” A lot of people wouldn’t or couldn’t use this ramp because parking was so crowded…
